Title: The Captain
Post by: LUFTVOLKS on October 31, 2011, 02:14:35 PM
Socalbombers new ride. Delivered to France through the tourist delivery program then shipped back to the states. Lowered spindles and dropped one notch in the back until he can get the drop kit installed.

Yesterday he called and gave me some bad news. The captains engine just gave up the ghost, any help to get him back on the road would be great.

Thanks tony for uploading those! Had a fucking blast talking to ya yesterday! The owner of chirco is going to sell me a "stout 1600" as he said for $600 and my old engine. I trust the dude. we are pals and what not so im going to go that route. and while the engine is out, im going to put in the bug tranny and the straight axle kit i have for it! So stoked!

No sweat, your ride is not so "stink bug" like you said.

Was the original paint Blue white over sea blue or cummulus white over sea blue?  The Blue, white, blue you have on it now sure looks like the early westy paint jobs!

Post by: socalbomber on October 31, 2011, 08:21:39 PM
Cummulus white over sea blue. The last owner mixed up that blue thats on it and he sprayed it in his back yard! for a long time, i thought that it was originally dove blue because theres OG blue showing in some spots and it is pretty dark, but when i was putting in the popouts, the paint under the window rubber was the OG white, so then i looked up what color sceme was white with a really dark blue and its the white over sea blue! One day, it will have the OG colors again, but that will be awhile!

Got your message about your new engine. Send me some pics so I can see if its a bus 1500 or later bug 1500.

Figure out what the timing issue was on the new engine??

What colors are you going to paint it?

Before I owned it:
Right after I got the engine for it, I took it out for a spin with a good bud who has a 67 west and we saw all this smoke coming from the airplane junk yards right behind the base, SO of coarse, I wanted to go see what it was that was burning cause I miss the Great Southern California fires now!

Yo, hows the new engine?
Title: Re: The Captain
Post by: socalbomber on March 13, 2012, 05:17:29 AM
Its great! Having some carb issues. it keeps back firing through the intake and it likes to spudder sometimes when im accelerating. I am having some weird shit going on with the rear suspension though. whenever i hit the gas, theres a clunk. I really dont believe its the internals of the tranny because its doing it when i take it out of gear and hit the brakes. I got under it the otherday to tighten down the tranny mounts at the nose cone, the bell housing bolts and the 4 bolts on the swing arm, but everything was tight. So now im going to check the engine mounting bolts to see if its those. But its starting to really scare me because its getting worse. Today I noticed that the clutch pedal has alot of play in it and it was tight a few weeks ago. I really need to get it on a lift or something to get under it better, because its tough getting under it with it slammed! Its just hard trying to work on it right now because Im on 12 hour shifts working from 6 at night to 6 in the morning. Ill figure it out! On a good note, the blue white on the roof is coming out really well!

Make sure your drums are tight.

As far as the backfire through the carb, make sure there are no intake leaks, the valves are adjusted and the timing is 28* TOTAL at 3000 rpm.

I would change the clutch cable too, it sounds like its stretching. While you are at it put in a new bowden tube as well.

Should've pulled forward just a bit more to take that picture. As if the engine were on fire.

So I was wrong on the Original paint colors. Its blue white over sea blue! From the research Ive been doing about that color combo, its a one year only combo and the majority of busses that had it were deluxes. On the M-code plate, there was a number that I couldn't figure out. On the samba, there was a question mark next to it, and in a book a friend let me borrow, the number didn't exist at all. Soooo, I ended up ordering a birth certificate for it to learn more about it when it was new! Heres some pictures of it!
Once I got that, I sent Everett Barnes an email about that number to let him know what it meant, because him and I had a discussion about it and he told me that he only knew of 2 other busses that had the number and they were both from France as well. So he updated it and also put my bus next to it in the "seen on"!
Today I decided to start pulling more paint off of it and heres what Ive got so far!
Started

Almost finished with this panel

If you're wondering about the slow moving vehicle magnet, heres the story. I went to the phoenix bugorama this past weekend and the bus topped out at 55mph. So the dude that was following me started making fun of me once we got there. We walked around the swap area to look for pop out windows for the old bastard and saw the magnet. I said fuck it, Ill buy it since its true! I did also get pop outs for the bus, spent a total of $30 for 3 pop outs! The frames are pretty toast, but thats fine. The glass in all three were perfect, which was the main reason I bought them! Heres another picture of the magnet!
Have any of you guys messed around with old burlap sacks? I going to upholster all the panels from the fire wall back with them! Saw a really bit chin bus online the other day with this set up and it looked really good actually!
Heres the web site
http://charlie48ida.skynetblogs.be/
The bus is a beat to hell early 15 window still rocking OG paint! Its basically the last "bus" on the first page. There is another bus below it but its a double cab and that thing looks sweet as hell also!
Heres some pictures of some of the ones I got!

Heres another picture of the bus from a few weeks back. Do any of you remember my bud matt? He had the silver 65 bug with red wheels and seats? Well he was out here and we went cruising!
Notice the curb feelers! Fucking awesome!
I lost the back one on the way back from bugorama. Also lost the rear bumper mounting bolts and nuts for the right side of the bumper on the same trip!

So Ive been kind of busy with this old bastard! Finished pulling out the original paint out the roof! Got sick of sanding it, so I found some crazy ass paint stripper that is like jelly! Once I put it on, I nay had to wait 30 seconds before I could take a razor lade to it. Only waiting for that long took off 5 coats of after market paint. It didn't really hurt the original paint unless i left it on there for a few minutes. OG paint is pretty burly shit! Once that shit was done, I wet sanded the fuck out of it starting off with 1000 grit, then 1500 grit and finally 2000 grit. Once i took a towel to all the residue, and then some clean water to wash the rest of the shit off, the paint looked like a polished marble! I finished that 2 weeks ago and I am still in aww over how well the paint came out!
Heres some pictures!

Then I bought some safari windows, cause they are just fucking awesome and because here in arizona, it gets pretty hot, so to me they are kind of important to have!
The window frames looked really good
(http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m568/Tristanlwallace/120404_0000.jpg)

Then the following day went to get the tabs welded in and this was at the shop!
From what the dudes at chirco were telling me, its the real deal!
Then the girl friend talked me into getting curtain material which was tough because it had to work with the burlap sacks that I have, but luckily we found something!
Then I bought a koch's restored steering wheel from my friend with the 67 westy! He said he was never going to use it, and since it was from koch's I knew it was good quality! I put it in over this last weekend and it is SOOOO nice compared to my original one! I love it, plus it has some sentimental value due to where its from!
Old steering wheel
(http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m568/Tristanlwallace/120417_0001.jpg)
New steering wheel!
I also fixed my brake lights, because those didn't work, fixed my license plate light, got rid of the new stereo that the last owner had put in and wired in the early bay window sapphire radio that was in the dash when I bought it! That only gets AM but I don't mind! Also moved the ignition from the dash where the P.O. had mounted it back into the pod that holds the speedo! Next Im going to repaint the grey with something a little closer to sea blue. Have to find something that is close. Will need Tonys help with that one! Then shooting to buy the back safari window and install the last 2 pop out windows that I bought up in Pheonix at Bugorama!

Just drove the bus to indio for a concert and my buddy rode his harley while i drove the bus! It was pretty sweet! Bus ran fantastically! drove it around 55-60 on the way there and on the way back we went 70-75 and through phoenix doing 80! That little 1500 single port CRUISES!!!! Heres a picture of us at the border on our way back!

Thanks! We camped out for 2 nights! It was awesome! There was only one other bus at the event and it happened to be a slammed early bay! I talked to the dude for awhile and he was pretty fucking cool! unfortunately didn't take any pictures because I was to shit faced to even think about it! Got a SHIT load of compliments about the bus which is always awesome and talked to a few older folks who told me stories about how they used to have a bus and how they would do cross country trips in theres and so on! Super kewl!

Hell ya I did! On the back of a flat bed! The engine over heated 10 miles west of blythe. I let it cool down for an hour, fired it back up and there was a REALLY BAD knocking noise coming for the inside of the case. So its now over at chirco getting the engine ripped apart

Yeah that desert is killer!! I drove the bus from ABQ to LA last week and it took 19 1/2 hours! I had to sleep 2 hours when I started hallucinating giant tumble weeds going across the freeway. We drove across the mojave at 2 pm at 100+ degrees, on the grades I was down to 40mph to keep the oil temps below 220. If you make it out to Vegas in October I recommend oil temp, oil pressure and cylinder head temp gauges so you know when to slow down or stop before its too late.

Glad you made it back alive, Im sure the captain will rise again!

Good idea on the temp gauges. The bus will rise again for sure! Its been around for 47 years, so its just taking a nap right meow! Octo was AWESOME by the way! It was like going to the best porn convention in the world! The classic was kewl also! Scored some amber colored head light lenses! I put them on and they are fucking sweet!

What year are you hoping to get? And thank you fr the compliment on the bus! Guess those amber colored head lights are super illegal in california. My dads old neighbor, whose a cop can over on day while I was tearing aprt the front end and said," you know if i saw this on the road, I would instantly pull you over. You have 3 illegal things just on the front end of your bus. You have amber colored head lights, open wind shields and no front plate" I told him ive got an arizona license and an arizona license plate, so I plead the 5th!

Ive learned a lot but dont know it all! Thats why I like helping people, you learn a lot more than you would than just working on your own stuff.

I couldnt find your pic of the wire wheels, probably spindle mount. I have never put the words classy and bus together, not sure thats a natural combination.

The spoked wheels that are not that double cab I was trying to show you weren't Ghetto fabulous! They were off some british sports car from back in the day! They actually look pretty good! The picture is in that album I wrote down. I had to double check if I but up the right one. The double cab is on the 29th row down. It also has the 30th row cause its so fucking kewl!

So I'm raising the bus back to stock. I can't afford to keep fixing shit whenever my bus punches the ground! Wish I could or I would go lower! So I bought four 15 inch bus rims today for $30 a piece! Not bad! Gonna clean them up and chuck some meaty ass mud terrain tires on it and go whomping!!! Cant wait!! Been looking at the split window forum, "stock suspension, big meats" on the samba and I'm totally gonna do it! Don't care if the purists hate on 15 inch bus wheels being on later model splitties! I like em! Plus I've been looking for gnarly tires for the 14's but thats nearly impossible, so fuck it!!! Doing the raise this weekend. I need to go through my brakes again. Master cylinder is leaking like a mofo. Not to excited about that being broken. Still can't wait!!!

You should LIFT IT!!  Use a 68/69 bay front beam for an 1 1/2 raise, do the dual circuit master for safety and 1 click in the rear so you can run some of these

Thanks dude! It was a blast!!! Unfortunately, it's now parked. For a few months. The engine that I got a full rebuild on, gave out on the way back to Tucson. It's under warranty, so I got to pull it and tear it Down to a long block again. I'm a little pissed with chirco about it. I've had the engine less than 3 months and have no more than 1500 miles on it. Im going to build an engine with my bud so I won't have to worry about shitty work. He wants it to be an 82 stroked, dual carbed, single port 1500!

Sorry to hear that. an 82 stroke with stock pistons is already an 1885!  Let me know if you need any parts and I will see what kind of deal Jeff can come up with.

No sweat. I am currently collecting parts for a replacement bus engine as the 1699 is getting tired after 85K miles.  Here is the combo

1800cc

Forged 74mm crank
AA thick wall slip in 88mm pistons
AA stroker I beams with ARP 2000 bolts
Web 218/119 cam w/ CB lightweight lifters
8.5:1 compression
AA 502 40x35 heads
stock weight 8 dowell flywheel
KEP 1700 clutch
Chromoly pushrods
Stock 1:1 rockers on solid shafts
1 1/2 sidewinder
40 Kadrons and dual 36 DRLA dellortos (depending what the dyno says)

Hoping fora cool running, 90hp,  flat torque curve and some decent mileage.

Do you know what exactly blew up on your engine? Rod or main bearing? Head/valve?

Did you ever install the gauges?

Stuck in 4th gear is due to a broken syncro allowing one of the "chicklets" to pop out and not let the gear selectors to slide back.  Been there. Time for the replacement.

Anyone up for a campout now that the weather is getting better?

Let's have a campout at the salton sea!!! I'm completely up for a campout! I'm currently building an interior for the bus. I bought a 5 sheets of 1/8 in red birch for the side panels and 3 sheets of 1/2 in red birch for cabinets and a 3/4 jump seat for behind the bulk head. I've already bought a z bed for it. Instead of building a closet that goes behind the back most cargo door, I'm going to build a half closet so the rear pop out is still functional and the top can be used as an arm rest. I know stock westys came with Baltic birch, but I wanted a darker, redder tone in the wood, plus I really liked the wood grain in the red birch! Im going to stain the wood a little darker and for all the hardware, door handles for the cabinets, the hinges and what not are all going to be brass. I've already started building the panels and hopefully start building the cabinets this week! As for the engine, I got that back on the 9th of February which was awesome because my birthday was 2 days after that! So it's back on the road again and running good so far! All I can say for the engine is, thank god I invested in the warranty! Let me know when and were you guys want to do a campout! I'll request it off work and take a few weeks off to come out and hang out!!!

Sorry i have been MIA for a bit! work has been killing me and life has just been hectic! Getting the interior done! Still need to make the cabinets, jump seat, tables and ceiling, but it's coming! Also have put the correct bumpers and doors on!

Empi makes a billet one for around $40 not sure on the quality though

If you NEED an og style Richardo in Argentina is the only one I know making repro split/barndoor can

Remember you still need to buy the cap and nut so that puts it close to $200 with shipping.

Sorry it's been forever since I've posted. I've been super busy with work. I've been tinkering with the bus here and there! I made curtains for it, installed a rear safari window, put white walls on the stock 14's, cleaned up a bunch of glue gunk left over from the insulation I yanked out awhile back, I'm getting all my pop out window frames sand blasted and then painted blue white so I can finally have a bus with no stationary glass! Hopefully this week I'm going to get back to building the interior for it! I cleaned up the m code plate. I haven't finished degunking the front cab yet, but it's a work in progress! I've also been helping my buddy Chris at his shop with a few busses! Hope all of you are doing really well and hope you guys had great holidays!

Glad to hear you are still at it. The kids and I are still thrashing here and there, Ricky just picked up a new race car for the turbo 2276.

Trying to plan a spring campout, you have any time off?
