Title: Turn signal wiring
Post by: Josh F. L. on June 22, 2012, 11:11:03 PM
Ok soo have a spare 67 beetle and the signals don't work... I looked at the light bulbs and they seem to be ok...so I'm guessing the wiring is not good. Anyone know how to wire it and or know where the wire location is at under the hood and that can guide me by telling me???? Help? Aha
Thanks to anyone!

I have had signal issues on both my 64 and my 69. The majority of the connections are under the front decklid behimd the dash. You may have a wire cover which is a big plastic cover, that will need to be removed. The best thing to do is get a wiring scematic for your year bug. Since most of the wiring is right there, it is pretty easy to start tracking every thing down with a testlight.

Ok so I found one schematic.. I got the front and back left signal to work!! But the right won't... Maybe it's a bad connection.. I'll be testing it

make sure to clean the connections and the fuse/fuse block with sand paper. Replace all the bulbs and sand down the bulb sockets and connections as well. Sometimes the connections inside the switch get gummed up too, if all the other connections are clean shoot some electrical cleaner in the switch and see if that cleans it up.

Thanks to all who has helped!!! I've manage to get my running lights , signals and license plate light on.... This is the first time I've manage to work on a VW... The only lights I can't figure out is break lights... Aha but more tinkering will hopefully help with aid of the schematics.

brake lights are the black wire with red stripe that come from the master cylinder switch. On early cars they go through the turnsignal switch on later cars they go throught the hazard light switch. On a 67 the hazard switch is usually the culprit on non working brake lights. Like all the other wires just clean them up and make sure the ground between the tail light housing is good to the fender itself.

Congrats on getting dirty on the bug and making progress!!

as much as it looks like a rats nest once you start following wires there are only 10-15 wires, so a 1 by 1 following will make it much easier

Yah it was gonna be hard to follow multiple wires... But I found out the windshield wires were connected to the wire that gives power to the back of the car
