1963 15 window deluxe
« on: November 23, 2010, 05:24:45 PM »
Got this in 1992 in trade for a 56 bug sedan which I only paid $300 for. It was all original paint, engine, trans etc. but of course missing seats in the back.

I put a 6v battery, added gas, bled the brakes and drove it on dry rotted tires for over a year. Made several trips to Mtn. High and Santa barbara. Going up the 101 and 14 at 25mph was fun! On the Mtn High trip the pass was closed due to a freak storm and I had to stay up in Lancaster for the night. Ever try to get a room when you are 17 years old and have a 15 year old girlfriend with you?

About a year later I decided to sand it down and primer it. Wish I would have left the og paint alone! Installed a 1600 DP at that time as well.

In July I decided to do a bit of body work and put some Krylon Jade green and Honeydew paint to make it look more shiny for the wife.

Went on some local forest roads today, NM is NICE!!!

Also cut down the roof rack and made it a double sloper with only 5 legs, much closer to an original full length westy rack.

When did you put the bullet turn indicators on and the circle tail lights? I just noticed that on the pictures from the mountain trip!
Going on safaris in your bushes and leaving donuts in your lawn with my zombie thrashing splitty!!!

Put them on right before the trip. Ive had them for a while and decided to put them on.

Since I will never be able to afford a real bullet 15, I decided to make a 61 clone. Thats the other reason I made the double sloper rack, 61 was the last year for that.

There are only three things that the most experienced eye can tell that its not a 61.

Almost got rearended the other day so mounted a third brakelight

It a 67 type I reverse light with a red lens.

Also Finished up the shop floor 1914 and installed it.

AS21 FI case
DMS CW 69mm crank
5.4 H beam rods w/ arp 2000 bolts
Engle 100 cam
NOS Mahle 94mm pistons from early 90s
NOS Brazil 041 heads
S&S 1 1/2 merged header with turbo tuck muffler
36 DRLAs

It pulls HARD and I barely have to push on the go peddle to get it going, a tractor engine is what comes to mind.  I will be going on some more camping trips in the near future and I thing it will pull the grades with no problem!

Free camping in Santa Fe National Forest

Off road to the Pecos Wilderness

Saw several herds of elk on a hike through the wilderness too. Only bad part was all the ticks in the grass.

Sun set on the way back through Hwy 41

Ill will miss the clean air and sunsets the most when leaving NM, but all the Vdubs in SoCal will make up for it!!
